THE WELL

“You cannot continually give to others without also taking care of yourself. Rest, boundaries, and self-care aren’t selfish, they’re necessary for a meaningful and sustainable life.”

For most of my life, I thought being a good person meant always being available. Always saying yes. Always helping. Always giving. Always carrying one more thing, fixing one more problem, solving one more crisis. And for a while, I wore that like a badge of honor. Then one day I realized something. I was exhausted. Not tired from work. Not tired from life. Tired in my soul. The kind of tired that sleep doesn’t fix. I was pouring into everyone around me while ignoring the fact that there was almost nothing left inside of me. That’s when I learned the lesson this well teaches. You can’t give people water if the well is dry. You can’t pour from an empty cup. You can’t save everyone while neglecting yourself. Somewhere along the way, a lot of us were taught that taking care of ourselves was selfish. That resting meant quitting. That setting boundaries meant we didn’t care. That’s nonsense. Even a well has to be refilled. The strongest people I know aren’t the ones who give everything away. They’re the ones who understand that they have to protect what sustains them. Their peace. Their health. Their faith. Their relationships. Their purpose. Because when the well is full, you can help a lot of people. When it’s empty, everybody suffers. Including you. So if you’ve been running on fumes, consider this your reminder: Rest isn’t weakness. Refilling isn’t selfish. And taking care of yourself isn’t abandoning others. It’s making sure you’ll still have something to give tomorrow.
