Truth #23 of 52
THE DEER
“Maturity isn’t winning every battle. It’s learning which battles deserve your time, energy, and attention, and having the wisdom to walk away from the rest.”
When I was younger, I thought winning meant proving a point.
If someone was wrong, I wanted them to know it.
If someone challenged me, I felt like I had to respond.
If life threw something my way, my instinct was to lower my head and charge straight into it.
Age has a way of teaching different lessons.
One of the most valuable things I’ve learned is that not every battle deserves your energy.
Some arguments aren’t looking for truth.
Some people aren’t looking for understanding.
Some situations aren’t looking for solutions.
They’re simply looking for your attention.
And attention is expensive.
Every minute you spend fighting the wrong battle is a minute stolen from something that actually matters.
Your family.
Your peace.
Your goals.
Your purpose.
I’ve watched people spend years fighting wars they could have walked away from in five minutes. I’ve seen friendships destroyed over pride. I’ve seen good people carry anger so long they forgot what they were angry about in the first place.
The deer teaches a different lesson.
It doesn’t survive because it’s the strongest animal in the forest.
It survives because it knows when to stay and when to leave.
When to stand its ground and when to walk away.
That’s wisdom.
And wisdom is often more valuable than strength.
These days, before I engage in a fight, I ask myself a simple question:
Will this matter a year from now?
Most of the time, the answer is no.
And when the answer is no, I let it go.
Not because I’m weak.
Because my peace is worth more than proving a point.
