The Candle

A candle is a strange thing when you think about it. The more it gives away, the brighter it becomes. Every bit of light it produces costs it something. The wax melts. The candle gets smaller. Piece by piece, it gives itself away so that others can see. I’ve met people like that. The teacher who stayed late to help a struggling kid. The parent who sacrificed things nobody ever noticed. The friend who answered the phone at two in the morning. The volunteer. The mentor. The neighbor. The ordinary people doing extraordinary things without expecting recognition in return. Most of them will never be famous. Most of them will never make headlines. But they’ve lit more lives than they’ll ever know. The world spends a lot of time celebrating the spotlight, but I’ve learned that real impact usually comes from people who quietly carry a flame into dark places. That’s the thing about kindness. You don’t lose it by giving it away. You multiply it. One encouraging word creates another. One act of generosity inspires the next. One person choosing compassion can start a chain reaction they may never live long enough to see. The candle never gets to watch every flame it helped ignite. It just burns. Maybe that’s the lesson. You don’t have to change the whole world. You just have to be willing to light the corner you’re standing in. Because one flame really can start a thousand more.
