The Anchor

Life has a way of reminding you that you’re not in control. You can do everything right and still find yourself in a storm. You can make good decisions and still face bad days. You can have a plan, a backup plan, and a backup for your backup, and life will still throw something at you that you never saw coming. Trust me, I’ve learned that one the hard way. For years, I thought peace came from having control. If I could just plan better, work harder, or prepare more, everything would be fine. Then life laughed. The truth is, peace doesn’t come from controlling the waves. It comes from knowing what holds you steady when the waves show up. For some people, it’s their faith. For others, it’s their family. It’s their values. Their purpose. Their principles. The things they refuse to compromise no matter what life throws at them. Those are the anchors. When my heart was racing at 237 beats per minute, I couldn’t control it. When anxiety showed up uninvited, I couldn’t control it. When surgeries piled up and life got heavy, I couldn’t control that either. But I could control what I held onto. I could choose gratitude instead of bitterness. I could choose hope instead of despair. I could choose to keep moving forward even when I wanted to quit. That’s the thing about anchors. You don’t need them when the water is calm. You need them when everything around you is trying to pull you away from who you are. So before the next storm arrives—and it will—ask yourself a simple question: What is anchoring your life? Because when the wind starts howling and the waves start crashing, whatever that answer is will determine whether you drift… or endure.
